Atlanta Weather | A Noisy Pest Set To Return

Atlanta Weather | A Noisy Pest Set To Return

Get ready, they are set to return, and soon! I am talking about that noisy, late spring, summertime pest the cicadas.

Tthe return of the 17-year cicadas will cover areas from Georgia to Connecticut, and the air will hum with their mating buzz. These bugs with their black bodies, striking red eyes, and orange wing veins have a rather unique lifespan. The periodical cicadas returning this year, known as the Magicicada Brood II, have been living   underground for the past 17 years.

It Could Be a Cool Summer, CPC Disagrees.....

It Could Be a Cool Summer, CPC Disagrees.....

What you are seeing above is the CPC "official forecast" for the period from June - August and notice again how they are saying it is going to be above normal for temps for the summer..... This is the exact same area that they said that the late winter and all of spring would be below normal for rain, and above normal for temps..... and we were neither. Now I am not one to go bashing on the CPC, but I will say this.....

The Weekend is Coming, the Weekend is Coming!! May 8th Update

The Weekend is Coming, the Weekend is Coming!! May 8th Update

Yup, the weekend is in view and it looks like part of it will be salvaged!!! Unfortunately that also means that part of it will be, well, wet..... There is a series of upper level disturbances out west that will be bringing us some rain and a few t-storms this weekend on Saturday...

For the Meantime!

Tomorrow will be one of the nicest days we have seen in a long time as temps will be heading up into the lower 80's thanks to a nice westerly breezy and the upper level low finally moving out towards the NE. Just take a look below and you will see that almost all of the metro area will be in the lower 80's for highs tomorrow!

This Weekend

Atlanta Weather | Warmer Weather is Here....But Not Long!

Atlanta Weather | Warmer Weather is Here....But Not Long!

The pesky area of low pressure that brought the rain and cooler weather to our area is finally pulling away. Still close enough to bring a few clouds to our Northeastern counties. There could be an isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon with the day time heating. It will only a slight chance (20%). But for the most part we will have partly sunny skies and temperatures feel much better. High will reach the mid to upper 70s. Thursday looks to be the best of the week as temperatures will heat up to around 80 degrees with mostly sunny skies.

Don’t get  use to the sunny warm weather, a cold front will approach from the West and bring a increase in clouds Friday. The front will also cause rain and thunderstorms to move back into the area late Friday and during the day on Saturday.
The good news is the front will clear the area by Sunday and we will have sunny and comfortable weather to start the work week.

Record Rain and Temperatures

Record Rain and Temperatures

Over the weekend, a low pressure system dumped 4.24" of rain on Atlanta, Georgia. A total of 3.40 inches of that fell on Saturday, making it not only a daily record for that date, but also Atlanta’s 6th heaviest May calendar day rain storm since record keeping began in 1878. Let’s put this in perspective…. In May, Atlanta averages 3.66” of rain. This May, we took in 4.28” in just the first 5 days!

However, as you recall, just a year ago, Georgia was under a drought. An extreme drought. Not anymore. You can see the current drought monitor (image above), followed by the drought monitor from the first week in January. Quite a difference! Next to those you see all the counties that were under flood warnings (bright green color).

Many creeks and lakes felt the impact of the heavy rains. Chatuge Lake, Lake Burton, and Lake Oconee were all less than 1 foot below flood stage when they crested early Monday morning.
