CAN THE WOOLLY WORM FORECAST THE WINTER?

Major Arctic Air Outbreak Coming In Tonight

Major Arctic Air Outbreak Coming In Tonight

The coldest air potentially in decades is heading into the region and will arrive later tonight. As of 4pm today the arctic air is pushing into Mississippi and will push into our state by around 11pm tonight.  Ahead of the cold front we will showers spread over the area between now and midnight and behind the front we will see some snow flurries around the metro with no accumulations.

As you can see below, the NAM is showing around an inch of snow up in the mountains later tonight, but the main issue for most of the metro area will be from the black ice that will form rapidly tonight. This is due to the intense cold front that will be moving in and drop our temps from 40's at 11pm to around 20 degrees by around 3am....

11pm Winter Weather Update

11pm Winter Weather Update

The latest nam is in and it is showing a very similar scenario to what we saw last night. A cold front will pass through around 11pm, ahead of it we will see nothing but rain. Once the front passes through we will see some flurries behind the front with little to no accumulation in Atlanta. If you look above you will see the NAM's estimate of how much snow the area will see. It looks identical to what we saw last night.

Below you will see the amazing difference in temps from one side of the front to the other. On one side temps are in the 50's and 60's, on the other it is nothing but teens!! Temps will go from 50's on Sunday night to teens on Monday morning! This will be the coldest air mass we have seen in 30 years!!

I will continue to monitor the weather changes and give you updates after every model run.

Potential for Snow and the Coldest Air in 30 Years Coming!

Potential for Snow and the Coldest Air in 30 Years Coming!

The potential for the metro area to see some accumulating snow is looking more and more likely for Sunday night into Monday morning. A very powerful arctic cold front will move into the heart of the nation and bring with it the coldest air the nation has seen in over 30 years!! Here is the setup:

Sunday afternoon will be a gray and rainy day with temps hovering in the upper 40's and lower 50's. The front will move through around 9pm and with it the temps will begin to fall and fall fast! We will see temps drop from 50's to the 20's rapidly! As this occurs we could see some lingering precip behind the front change to snow. At this point time totals are not entirely certain, but we could see some accumulations in the entire metro area!

Coldest Air in A Decade Comes to North Georgia

Coldest Air in A Decade Comes to North Georgia

There are two big  cold air invasions we are going to experience over the next week. The first one comes today with arctic air spilling into the state as we speak. Over the next few hours we can expect winds to gust to around 45 mph and temps to plummet!! By tomorrow morning temps across the area will be in the teens and even a few single digits with wind chills below zero in the far northern counties. There is a slim chance of some snow flurries up north, but the main story is going to be the cold.

Coldest Air in 4 Years Heading This Way

Coldest Air in 4 Years Heading This Way

Take a look at the image above and you will that the Arctic circle is seeing the coldest air in years!! Consequently chunks of that air will be breaking off and coming down in this direction. A small taste gets here Friday during the day | BLOG ON THE SNOW CHANCE FOR THURSDAY NIGHT AND COLD AIR | , but the massive blast of 30 degree below normal air gets here next week and I can tell you this: It is going to be a major shock to the system.

Potential for Winter Weather Then Big Cold Next Week

Potential for Winter Weather Then Big Cold Next Week

A powerful and very cold storm system will head in this direction and again bring another heavy rain event to parts of the metro area. The latest computer models are showing the rain coming in tomorrow morning, this time the southern portions of the metro will see the heaviest rain. But on the back side of this storm as it brings some cold air down and we could see a brief rain snow mix in the metro area tomorrow night with non accumulations expected.

Next week there is a batch of arctic air coming down that could bring single digits to parts of the metro, mainly north of the Atlanta area. In the metro Atlanta area we could see lows Tuesday morning in the mid to lower teens.
