Atlanta Weather | Cold Air Returns

You wouldn’t know it by today’s temperatures in the upper 50s, but the cold is going to make a return. You may have already been hearing about the polar vortex making its way back toward the US, but this time around it will not move as far to the south.

The dangerous cold air has already started to invade the Upper Midwest and will continue to spread across more of the eastern half of the U.S. through Tuesday night.

Our temps will fall into the teens for overnight lows Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Highs will only reach the 30s on Wednesday.  Back to the 40s on Thursday, and 30s again Friday before we modify back to the 50s on Sunday.

Atlanta Weather | Cold Air Hanging Around

Atlanta Weather | Cold Air Hanging Around

A lot of folks getting tired of the cold weather, and unfortunately it is not going anywhere anytime soon. The parade of “Alberta Clippers” will continue to push through the area and more than anything, will reinforce the cold air.
Precipitation will be limited with the fronts, so if you like snow, you will have to leave our state and head north.

Atlanta Weather | What Is An Alberta Clipper

Atlanta Weather | What Is An Alberta Clipper

Winter weather terms are becoming pretty popular these days. First the “polar vortex,” and now you will hear about the “Alberta Clipper, as a series of clippers will be moving through the area.

So what is an Alberta Clipper?
An Alberta Clipper is a winter storm system that originates from or near Alberta, Canada. It is known as a clipper because like clipper ships the storms move at very rapid speeds.

An area of low-pressure develops on the lee side of the Canadian Rockies (near Alberta),  is driven by the jet stream (a river of fast winds above the earth’s surface), and moves southeast  into the Northern Plains, then to the Great Lakes and eventually off the Mid-Atlantic coast often dragging a cold front through the southeastern parts of the US.

Atlanta Weather | Winter Weather Advisory

Atlanta Weather | Winter Weather Advisory

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through this afternoon mainly for the higher elevations of the North GA. Mountains. Areas above 1500 feet could see a dusting up to an inch mainly on the grassy surfaces. The Atlanta Metro area could see a flurry or two through early afternoon. The system does not have a lot of moisture associated with it and temps are above the freezing mark in many spots. Would not be surprised if the advisory is cancelled as drier air works in behind the front later today.
Temps will be much cooler this afternoon with highs in the low to mid 40s. Yesterday, highs were at or near 60 degrees.
We will have weak disturbances that will continue to move through the area reinforcing the colder air over the next few days keeping temps in 40s. We will get back to the low 50s by Sunday.

Atlanta Weather | Moon Names

Atlanta Weather | Moon Names

Did you know that the full moon has names? Several names, and some are pretty weird. Our friends at Space.com help explain.

The first full moon of 2014 rises this week, but despite being the first of the year, it has the surprising name "Old Moon" for some cultures, but it's not the only lunar nickname for the event.

Full moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes of a few hundred years ago kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Since the lunar ("synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2014. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern Time Zone:

The Hand Of God

The Hand Of God

This is incredible. One of NASA's new spaceships have used its Xray technology to capture an image of a dead start that completely resembles a hand. It has been dubbed as "The Hang Of God" and for a good reason, it looks like it. Here is the fascinating article from NASA:

January 09, 2014

Two new views from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, showcase the telescope's talent for spying objects near and far. One image shows the energized remains of a dead star, a structure nicknamed the "Hand of God" after its resemblance to a hand. Another image shows distant black holes buried in blankets of dust.

"NuSTAR's unique viewpoint, in seeing the highest-energy X-rays, is showing us well-studied objects and regions in a whole new light," said Fiona Harrison, the mission's principal investigator at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.
