Satellite Falling From the Sky This Weekend! | Weather
This is an update to a blog I posted a few weeks back. A European satellite that has been responsible for gravity mapping has officially run out of fuel! The Xenon powered satellite that has been dubbed the "Ferrari of all satellites" it out of gas and has been working its way into the stronger pull of gravity of the Earth for the last 3 weeks. That's right, GOCE (the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) will come plunging down to earth either on Sunday or Monday!
This gorgeous satellite weighs in at 1.2 tons and is only expected to break up about 75%!! This means that around 25%, or 500 pounds, of this "Ferrari" will come plunging to earth! The good news is that it is supposed to break apart into about 40 or 50 pieces. Still, that is 40 or 50 10 pound pieces... Luckily these should also burn up as they plunge through the atmosphere and most likely land in the Ocean.
Nobody knows where it will land, but I will definitely keep you posted on this!
