Incredible Thundersnow in the Northeast! | Weather

This is just awesome!! This is thundersnow from tonights major winter storm in the NE US! Thundersnow only happens in the strongest of winter storns in the same way that a regular thunderstorm happens.

Snow usually falls gently from the sky in non convestive clouds, not the case with thundersnow! It is pure convection with strong vertical motion caused by very intense winter instability!. As the air is rising rapidly, the snow actualy creates friction by flakes hitting each other as they are ascencding and decending!! This creates a charge in the clooud, and lightning releases the electricity. Boom, thundersnow!!
