Newly Discovered Comet Visible in 2013! | Weather
In 2013 we are going to get a rare treat! If everything goes according to what some scientists are saying, we could be in for a neat celestial treat in the form of a big bright comet named Comet Ison!
Newly Discovered Comet
Ison was discovered back around the last week of September and has a very small amount of attention from us in the media, well that is about to change as we get closer to being able to see this "dirty snowball" in space! Right now according to NASA, Comet Ison is somewhere on the outskirts of the outer orbit of Jupiter heading towards the orbit of Mars. As it gets closer to Mars, which should be sometime near November, the comet will start to react to the changes in temps in outer space and begin to morph. As it undergoes some changes on its surface cracks will form and giant plumes of gas and ice will shoot out from the giant ball of ice and start to produce the tail that all comets are known for.
For the next 3-4 months Ison will get closer to the Sun and undergo more changes. At one point in time it will be within 800,000 miles from the Sun as it gets whipped around to send it back out to space! There is a chance that Ison will break up as it encounters heat, gravity and a host of other things while it is flying by the Earth! If it doesn't, the sun will reflect all the light from the tail and we will be able to see Ison for a few months right underneath the Sun before sunset. There is a good chance that Ison will be the brightest comet we have seen, ever!
