2012 Lightning Deaths/Injuries

With only 4 days left in the year we take a look at the number of lightning fatalities with a total so far of 28 killed and 213 injuries.  That means we had 2 more fatalities than last year, which is not a surprise since last year was a record low year. In 2011 there were 26 people killed and 246 injuries. So while we did have two more fatalities than last year, we had 33 less people injured.

While lightning fatalities have continued to decline, in even just the last 10 years, a few years have seen a slight increase. Since 1940, lightning has killed an average of 128 people per year. However, in just the last 10 years that average has dropped to just 37 per year. By comparison, 323 people per year died from lightning from 1940-1949.
