Wind Gusts to 40mph, Then a VERY Cold Night! | Weather
Title (Max 100 Characters)
It has been a very windy day today with some of N Georgia receiving wind gusts up to around 40mph in some parts of N Georgia earlier today! The picture above is what happened earlier in metro Atlanta when we were having gusts near 40mph! The good news is that the winds will start to decrease over the next few hours, the problem is that we are going to get very cold tonight!!
Short Term
As you can see below we have what we call an East Coast Bomb heading through the NE right now. This is a pattern that is what we should have been seeing in the middle of winter. Everything came together for this late season snow storm with and area of pressure developing in the Gulf of Mexico and moving across Florida, just enough cold air to fill in on the backside of the system, and a potent upper wave to allow the low at the surface to deepen rapidly! It also hugged the coast so it could feed off the warm waters of the gulf stream!! What this did was allow the area of low pressure to deepen and start pulling in winds from every direction! It all started yesterday with the winds increasing throughout the day bringing cold air in from the north. Tonight those winds are going to start calming down a bit to around 6-12 mph tonight. This calming of the winds will allow the temps to fall off into the upper 30's and lower 40's. The winds will be up enough to keep the temps from falling down to the freezing mark, in the metro area we will see lows in the upper 30's. Tomorrow the winds will still be up just a bit, but at least our highs will make it into the upper 60's!! Highs will return to normal temps by Wednesday!
I will have the long range forecast for the remainder of the week later tonight, I am a bit behind in the rest of my work due to a meeting!
