ATLANTA -- Two more rounds of heavy rain and flooding can be expected over the latter portion of this week and early next week.

A second round of heavy rain is expected Monday and Monday night with an additional 2 inches of rain over central Georgia, and another inch of rain expected in north Georgia.

The combined amounts can lead to as much as 3-to-6 inches of rain across north and central Georgia through the period. Higher rain amounts are possible.

11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil says areas of flash flooding are possible with these storm systems, and minor flooding of larger creeks or rivers can be expected with the significant rain total amounts. Given the pre-existing conditions from the rains over the past week, additional areas of flooding may occur.

"The usual areas -- like Big Creek and Peachtree Creek are likely to see some flooding," McNeil said. "Keep in mind, however, that this is not a single rain event, but will happen over the course of days."

Motorists are cautioned that with the heavier rains on Friday, that both the morning and evening rush hours will be expected to be messy.

A storm system over the southen Plains states is expected to move into the Midwest on Friday. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to be drawn into the storm system, bringing widespread rains across Georgia through Saturday. A second storm system is expected to move from the central Plains eastward drawing additional Gulf moisture northward on Monday, bringing heavy rains across the state through early Tuesday.

Portions of the Plains states can expect heavy snowfall beginning Thursday. Snows are expected to spread into the Midwestern states through the weekend.
