Officials: EF-1 tornado touched down in Banks Co.

ATLANTA -- The National Weather Service says Wednesday night's windstorm spawned a tornado in Banks County.

Officials called the storm a "high-end" EF-1 category tornado with wind speeds estimated at 107 miles per hour. They said the storm initially touched down in a heavily wooded area near the intersection of Wright Street and Scales Creek Road, about 1.4 miles north of Homer. The storm moved northeast from there, before lifting about 9.1 miles northeast of Homer.

The storm track was at least 200 yards wide, and, according to National Weather Service officials, was on the ground for 7.8 miles. No severe structural damage or injuries resulted from the tornado.

The tornado snapped tree trunks and caused minor roof damage to one home.
