NASA before & after photos show results of Sandy's fury | News
MANTOLOKING, N.J. -- NASA photographs show what areas affected by Hurricane Sandy looked like before and after the storm's fury landed in the New York/New Jersey region.
A number of the photographs show remarkable scenes of devastation.
In one such dual shot, a 2007 image of the coastal New Jersey town of Mantoloking, population 296, shows a barrier island, loaded with nice homes on scenic Ocean Boulevard, which leads to the Mantoloking Bridge over Barnegat Bay, back to the mainland.
A photograph taken on Oct. 31 shows many of those homes destroyed and the bridge, which was built in 2005 as a replacement for a 1930s-era bridge, partially submerged and strewn with debris from the damaged and destroyed buildings. A new inlet connects the inland waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Mantoloking was noted as the wealthiest town in New Jersey and the 15th wealthiest community in the United States, with an average per capita income of more than $114,000.
