Tropical Storm Alberto forms off Carolina coast

ATLANTA -- Wow! It's not even officially hurricane season yet.  The first tropical storm of the year has formed off the Carolina coast.  Tropical Storm Alberto developed Saturday afternoon. 

We talked about this storm Saturday morning having a slight chance of tropical development. It really ramped up in strength throughout the day and picked up some tropical characteristics.  That's why the hurricane center named it in the 5 p.m. advisory Saturday. (Advisory below)

This storm won't have too much of an effect on us. We are on the "quiet" side of Alberto. It will enhance our easterly flow.  That is what is causing the storms to develop along the North Georgia mountains this afternoon.

MOVING TOWARD THE SOUTHWEST NEAR 3 MPH...6 KM/H...AND A SLOW
SOUTHWESTWARD MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY.  A
TURN TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST AND THEN TOWARD THE NORTH AND
NORTHEAST IS EXPECTED BY MONDAY.  

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MPH...75 KM/H...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. SOME STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE OVER THE NEXT DAY OR SO.
