Federal report gauges U.S. impacts of global warming

Clear Skies for the Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower

Clear Skies for the Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower

We will have good visibility overnight for the Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower.  It will peak overnight into Tuesday morning between 3am and 6am.  The Earth is moving through some debris from Halley’s Comet.  This debris burns up as it hits the Earth’s atmosphere.  This makes this meteor shower visible.  It is more active for sky watchers in the southern hemisphere.  Here in the northern hemisphere, the shower is less active.  Don’t expect to wake up early to see a sky full of meteors streaking across the sky.  Only a few of these will be visible here in the Atlanta area.  If you do see one, it will most likely have a long trail as it streaks across the sky.

You don’t have to look at any particular direction.  Just look up and they could fly in any direction across the sky.  The time when it could be most active is just before dawn.
