Atlanta Weather | Severe Chances for Tomorrow

Atlanta Weather | Severe Chances for Tomorrow

Short Term

It looks like the threat for severe weather is just not really materializing across NW Georgia which is fine with me. None the less, look below for a look at radar for the latest update. Granted there will be a few showers around the state tonight that could get a bit heavy with the rain, the threat for severe just isn't there.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow looks a bit more concerning for me. A cold front will be moving through the state starting early in the morning in the NW section of the state. More model runs will come out later tonight and I will update the blog. Right now we can expect a line of strong to severe t-storms to move through around the 1-3pm time frame.

My Thoughts

Atlanta Weather | An Update to the Severe Weather Chances

Atlanta Weather | An Update to the Severe Weather Chances

Short Term

Watching storms developing in parts of Alabama this evening. They are still way ahead of the warm sector which is good news. When they are ahead of the warm sector they are what is known as "Elevated Storms", basically they form above the low level boundary layer and can't tap into any low level moisture. In a nutshell we will see these elevated storms continue to move towards the metro area and give some brief heavy rain at times later this evening.

If throughout the overnight that area of instability moves into NW Georgia, we could see some stronger development. I will keep you all updated

Heading out tonight?

Grab an umbrella as you head out the door. It might not be raining right at this moment, but more rain is likely later tonight.

Atlanta Weather | Severe Weather Chances up Tonight and the Weekend

Yes believe it or not we are in the middle of January, actually we are in what is supposed to be the coldest week of the year and we are dealing with the chances of severe weather Tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. Check out the risk areas below.

TONIGHT'S CHANCES

ATLANTA WEATHER | Potential storms develop tonight

Latest update from the Storm Prediction Center puts north and northwest Georgia in the "slight risk" for severe thunderstorms this evening.  The chances are still pretty slim.  Just don't be surprised if you hear some rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning.  An isolated storm could kick up some wind that could exceed the "severe" threshold.

Still keeping an eye on rain amounts.  As soggy as it seems out there, Atlanta only picked up .01" of rain in the official rain guage through 7am.  We'll pick up more off and on rain during the day and even more on Saturday.

Check out the video for a look at the rain amounts, timing, and potential for severe weather.

Warmer and Wetter

Warmer and Wetter

The roads were pretty wet for the drive in to work.  A few areas of light to moderate rain moved through overnight and early this morning.  We will see more of the off and on showers today.  It won't be raining non-stop, all day long.  We will have some dry hours mixed in at times, too.

Mild and moist:  It was much milder this morning thanks to the clouds holding in some warmth.  We were in the upper 40s and low 50s in Atlanta.  It was a little cooler in the 40s to the north and east of Atlanta.  It will remain mild today.  Temps will move up to 58 this afternoon.  It will be even warmer over the weekend with highs back to the 60s.

Rain Totals:  Our focus over the weekend will be the rain.  We will have a better coverage of rain on Saturday.  Our computer progs are showing some pretty good rain amounts.  Check out the picture at the top that shows rain potential of
