Very Cold Start This Morning

The cold air has moved in place this morning. Temperatures dropped as low as 20 degrees in many spots. When you factor in the winds, blowing at 15 to 20mph, make the 20 degree temps feel like the teens and single digits on exposed skin.
Dressing in layers would be a good idea today, as highs will only rise into the mid to upper 30s. There will be plenty of sunshine through the afternoon.  Winds will continue to diminish as well this afternoon. Lows tonight will be cold again, dipping into the 20s.
We will feel a slight warm up by week’s end.

WEATHER BLOG | Meteor shower to kick off 2012

(USA TODAY) -- If you snooze you'll lose Wednesday morning, when a little known but active meteor shower will start 2012 for people stalwart enough to brave the chilly hours before dawn.

The Quadrantids, named for a now-extinct constellation, will be visible for two hours early Wednesday, from about 3 to 5 a.m. local times.

The shower is likely to produce up to 100 falling stars an hour, making for a good show. People across North America who stay up late enough, and who have a clear sky, should get a nice view, says Conrad Jung, an astronomer at Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland.

Other than typical January temperatures, the weather should cooperate for watchers: "Viewing should be great over most of the country," reports Weather Channel meteorologist Mark Ressler. The only potentially cloudy spots should be in the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes and parts of the Northeast, he says.

WEATHER BLOG | Some Flurries North, Frigid For the Rest of Us

The cold air is here!  The wind continues to whip up from the NW at 15-20mph.  The wind advisory that was supposed to expire at 7pm has been extended until 1am.  That wind continues to push more cold air toward the south.

A few clouds have moved in over extreme north Georgia.  The cold air is squeezing out any moisture from those clouds in the form of a few snow flurries.  We have reports of flurries in Blairsville and scattered over the mountain region of the state.  We aren't expecting any accumulation with the snow.

The big story will be the drop in temperatures.  We expect a low in Atlanta of 22 degrees.  Many areas outside the city will be in the upper teens.  It will still be breezy in the morning, too.  We will have wind chills in the teens and even some single digits.  It will move to 32 degrees around 9pm tonight.  It will stay below freezing for about 16 hours until noon on Tuesday.
