A Tornaod Watch is in effect for  Bartow, Catoosa, Chattogga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield Counties until 10am.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms over Alabama are moving eastward so far have been weakening due to our cooler temps. Some of the storms could hold together as temps warm later this morning.

We will continue to keep you updated right here and on 11alive News all day long.

ATLANTA WEATHER | Tornadoes confirmed in Ark., moving toward Ga.

ATLANTA -- A major January severe weather outbreak is taking place Sunday night in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Western Tennessee.  We are monitoring these storms as they move to the east toward Georgia.

There have been numerous tornado warnings in Arkansas with damage and tornado emergencies declared in some counties there.  The line will move east through Mississippi overnight and eventually into NW Alabama.

The line will move into northwest Georgia between 6am and 8am Monday.  It will continue south and east into Metro Atlanta between 8am and 11am, then move south of Atlanta after lunch.

The cool "wedge' that is over us right now is going to act in our favor by helping to weaken these storms as they move in.  I still expect some thunder and lightning and the potential for severe thunderstorms with the passage of the storms.  However, it won't be the same type of outbreak as they are having Sunday night to the west.

Risk Remains Low for N Georgia Tonight

Risk Remains Low for N Georgia Tonight

RISK FOR TONIGHT

Tonight there is a very nasty severe weather outbreak going on in Arkansas that will translate to TN and south KY later tonight. Metrto Atlanta is not in an enhanced risk area tonight or tomorrow. Far NW Georgia (Walker, Dade, Catoosa) cold see some strong storms tomorrow late in he morning, but as for tonight we are going to be just fine. We will see some rain move in from the west, but as for severe weather we will not see any tonight.

TOMORROW

The intense energy that is affecting Arkansas and W TN tonight will quickly move to the NE tomorrow. We will see rain and a few t-storms tomorrow morning into the early afternoon, but the risk for the type of severe weather Arkansas is having is low.

Storms Ready to Fire Up to the West-WEATHER BLOG

Storms are ready to fire up to our west.  After a relatively quiet day, it is about to get active for northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, west Mississippi and west Tennessee.

A developing storm system diving to the south will mix with some warm and unstable air along the Mississippi River.  These storms will turn severe this evening and overnight to the west.  There is a good likelihood of severe thunderstorms and long-track tornadoes in the states mentioned above.  We are anticipating a new tornado watch to be issued anytime for those areas.

Risk Areas: The storm prediction center has placed north Louisiana, southern Arkansas, west Mississippi and west Tennessee and southern Kentucky  in a "moderate" risk for severe storms.  A "slight" risk extends into west Georgia for the early morning hours on Monday.

SEVERE WEATHER

We have a bit of a situation to our west tonight into tomorrow morning. There is a high likelihood that there will be a prolonged outbreak of severe weather in the mid section of the country tonight into tomorrow morning. The good news is that it looks as of right now that most of N Georgia is going to be spared from the brunt of the severe weather. A few counties in the NW section of the state could see some storms (Walker, Dade, Catoosa) in the early morning hours. By the time the storms make it there the instability will be much less than it will be later tonight to our west.

ENHANCED RISK

ATLANTA WEATHER | Southern Severe Weather Outbreak

The threat for a severe weather outbreak in the south is looking more likely for areas to our west today.  Arkansas, Mississippi, West Tennessee and NW Alabama are the areas mostly likely to see severe storms and tornadoes during the day Sunday.  The Storm Prediction Center updated the "slight" risk to a "moderate" risk for those areas.  The "slight" risk extends into west and northwest Georgia.

Dense Fog Advisory-WEATHER BLOG

A dense fog advisory is in effect for areas south and east of Atlanta until 10am Sunday.  After 1.97 inches of rain fell here in the Atlanta area, there is still plenty of moisture in place at the surface.  We will have some fog developing during the overnight hours toward Monday morning.  Visibilities will be reduced in many areas.

Sunday will begin with fog, mist and drizzle.  An east wind will keep us a little cooler with some off and on light showers for the first part of the day.  Another line of storms will approach Sunday night.  Right now, it looks like the best chance for some stronger thunderstorms will be Monday morning.  The Storm Prediction Center puts the main risk to our west late Sunday.  That risk area will most likely shift to us into Monday morning.

Check out the video for an hour by hour look at the next system moving in.
