Tracking Rain moving toward Georgia-WEATHER BLOG

We already have rain in northwest Georgia tonight.  The rain in Dade, Walker, and Whitfield county contains some light rain along with pockets of moderate rain.  The line extends from NW Ga. back into Alabama and all the way down to the Gulf coast.

Current analysis: The heaviest rain moved through Birmingham before 7pm.  That line will get to the GA/AL border by 9pm.  This isn't severe.  The lightning with this system is limited.  It does contain some gusty winds.  It's mainly moderate to heavy rain.  The line is weakening a little as it moves closer to Georgia.

Rain Moving into NW Georgia

Rain Moving into NW Georgia

We are keeping a close watch on Live 11Alive Radar this afternoon as a line of showers moves into the state.  This line is pushing into northwest Georgia late Saturday afternoon.  The showers will fill in a little more over northwest Georgia through 6pm.  They will cover more of west Georgia by 9pm.  Then eventually into Atlanta before midnight.

This line does not contain any severe weather.  It did produce some flooding back in Louisiana earlier.  The line will weaken as it moves into our area.  We are expecting around a half inch of rain.  Some areas may pick up closer to an inch if you get hit by one of the embedded heavier showers in the line.

The rain will end early Sunday.  Clouds will be stubborn to break Sunday, but temps will continue to be warm.  Highs Sunday will be near 68.

I'll have a video update coming up.

More Showers on the Way-WEATHER BLOG

We started the day with a few showers really early Saturday.  Most of the rain early was north of I-20.  We will continue with a good coverage of clouds and only spotty showers for the first part of day.  We will have a better chance of showers later in the afternoon into the evening hours.

There will be plenty of dry hours at times today.  It won't be a total washout.  In fact, the rain totals will not be too impressive.  We will have about a half inch or less of rain with this system.

There will be some pockets of moderate to heavy rain at times later tonight when the main area of rain moves in.  The showers will end early Sunday.  The skies will remain mostly cloudy Sunday afternoon.

The warm air is also staying with us.  Highs this weekend will hold in the 60s.  We will eventually move into the upper 50s by Monday with mostly cloudy skies.

Atlanta Weather | Rain in the Forecast for the Weekend

Atlanta Weather | Rain in the Forecast for the Weekend

For the first time today I heard someone complain about all the rain we have been getting. It was when I was walking back to my car after a workout. A friend asked me if it was going to rain this weekend and I said yes.... A woman at her car then quickly turned and said "Uh.... not again...." Yes again, another weekend with rain. But remember just a mere 60 days ago we were in a MAJOR drought, now just a moderate one but climbing quickly.

Short Term

Rain in SW parts of the N Georgia area this evening will continue to move towards town tonight, but for the most part they will stay to the SW. The winds are from the straight east which is bringing in some drier air. The rain in the metro should start a little later tonight, like around midnight.

Saturday and Sunday

ATLANTA WEATHER | Warm temps spur early bloom

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Georgia's warm weather in recent days has prompted some plants to begin their growth cycles early, which could soon pose problems for people who suffer from allergies.

WEATHER INFORMATION ZONE | Atlanta Weather Forecast and Radar

Hall County extension coordinator Michael Wheeler tells The Times of Gainesville that several plants, including rose bushes, have begun growing new foliage. In some areas, trees and plants have already started budding.

Wheeler says an early bloom could mean that people accustomed to experiencing allergies in May might need to prepare for an earlier season.

Wheeler says a freeze later this year could be harmful to some vegetation, but plants are fairly resilient and could recover.

Clouds Moving Back In

Partly cloudy skies starting off this morning. Clouds will be on the increase through the afternoon. Temperatures remain mild with highs in the low 60s. Mostly cloudy skies by 6 or 7pm this evening, but the rain will not move in until after midnight.
Showers will be off and on through the weekend. Better chance of rain on Saturday. Temps through the weekend will be near 60!

 Long Term:

Drier air will work in by Monday evening, and that set us up for Sunshine for much of the week!
