Taste of Winter This Weekend

We haven’t seen many cold days this winter, but cold air will be moving into North Georgia this weekend. A cold front is forecast to push south bringing arctic air to much of the eastern half of the nation.

Look for the clouds to increase this afternoon, and a slight chance of showers later. Any lingering showers will taper off as snow, especially for the North GA Mountains. Skies will clear by Saturday afternoon, but the sunshine will not heat us up! Temps will be falling from the 40s into the 30s during the day Saturday.

Long Term

The cold air will hang around for Sunday. We will have mostly sunny skies, but high will only be in the mid 40s. Another front will approach the area late Monday and increase our chance of showers Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Coldest Air of the Winter Coming, Snow in N Georgia Next Week?

Coldest Air of the Winter Coming, Snow in N Georgia Next Week?

My gut has been telling me all along that winter was nowhere near over..... It turns out it was right, winter makes itself known this weekend with a major blast of cold air coming down straight from Canada. We are talking about a major freeze across the state that will affect all of the trees that have already bloomed out, including some of the peach trees..

Short term

Tonight will continue to see a lot of clouds around the state with chilly temps. Temps won't be as cold tonight as they were this morning thanks to an increase in the cloud cover. Winds will be light from the north at around 3-6 mph. Tomorrow will be a bit milder than tomorrow with highs making it into the upper 50's with light winds from the SW at around 10-15mph.

This Weekend

Cold Air Coming This Weekend

Skies will be clear for the most part today. Plenty of sunshine with highs right where they should be for this time of year (55 degrees). Skies remain clear tonight, allowing temps to drop into the 30s.
After a chilly start, Friday will feature sunshine to start, but the clouds will increase during the afternoon. A cold front will be dropping south. Only a slight chance of showers overnight and early morning Saturday.

Long Term

Saturday morning will start with mostly cloudy skies. Skies will clear behind a cold front, but the sunshine will not warm us up. Cold air will move in, and stick around through the weekend. Highs will be below the average. We will gradually warm up, with the chance for showers increasing Tuesday and Wednesday.

Severe Weather Awareness Week | Tornado Safety

Tornadoes are mother nature's most destructive force on a small scale. They come out of nowhere and can cause serious problems for life and property. This is taken from the national weather service home page and I thank them for covering this!

Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air, extending from the thunderstorm that is in contact with the ground. Tornadoes can vary in shape, size and intensity. Most tornadoes are weak, lasting a few minutes and producing winds of less than 100 mph. However, a few tornadoes are strong or even violent. These tornadoes last from 20 minutes to over an hour and can produce winds of between 100 and 300 mph.

Colder Air Coming to N Georgia!

Colder Air Coming to N Georgia!

The image you are looking at above is a map of temps in N America, you will notice the key to the right as well. Temps where there is a lot of red should be purple, but it is trying to change! So where is winter? Yeah yeah yeah, by now the term "where's winter" is cliche! But it is true, we are around 10 degrees above the average for the afternoon high from the beginning of winter back in December, and around 6 degrees above the normal for the morning lows. It is so far the 7th warmest winter on record for Atlanta and on the way to climbing to #6. The good news is that we are above average for rainfall for this year which is the first time since last March we have been in this position! Well, changes are a coming!
