Southern Snow Brings Few Flurries to NGA Mountains-WEATHER BLOG

Southern Snow Brings Few Flurries to NGA Mountains-WEATHER BLOG

Don't rush out for milk and bread!  There is only a slim chance of a few flurries in the north Georgia mountains Sunday evening.  This light rain that is ending over the area will move out at the same time some colder air moves in.  That colder air will squeeze out any remaining moisture from those clouds in the form of some light rain mixing in at times with a few flurries.  Those flurries will only occur in the higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains.  Even in the mountains, the temperature profiles are only marginal for the chance for some flurries.  If any do fall at all, we aren't expecting any accumulations.

The picture above shows the potential snow accumulations for areas just to our north.  East Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia and parts of North Carolina will see some snow accumulations.  Some areas will have as much as 2 to 3 inches.

Rain Ending Late Sunday-WEATHER BLOG

It'll be a soggy Sunday!  More rain will move through today.  That will add another half inch of rain before it ends later this afternoon.  We picked up a half inch of rain yesterday, too.

It will turn breezy and cooler today.  The wind will come in from the NW at 10-15mph.  We will see the sky clearing tonight with even colder air by morning.  Lows dip to 34.

Check out more of an explanation in the video update.  I'll have another blog update later!

Saturday Late Night update-WEATHER BLOG

The rain will stick around for a big part of the day Sunday.  It will gradually taper off late in the afternoon.  We've picked up around a half inch of rain so far in the Atlanta area.  More will add up to between 1 and 2 inches before it ends.

The severe weather stays to the south.  Our main risk here won't be from damaging winds or tornadoes.  Our main threat will be the impressive rainfall amounts.

Check out the video for a look at the rain projections.

Rain/Storm Update

Rain/Storm Update

So far, we've seen a good coverage of light rain over the area.  There have been some pockets of moderate rain at times scattered around metro Atlanta and north Georgia.  The heaviest rain has been south of I-20.  As of 8:30pm, Hartsfield-Jackson airport has picked up more than a half inch of rain.  The rain will continue for the rest of the evening into the overnight hours and for a big part of the day Sunday.  The rain will eventually taper off late afternoon Sunday.

With this persistent rain, we will continue to see the rain totals rise.  We expect to see between 1 and 2 inches of rain in the Atlanta area.  North Georgia will pick up around an inch.  The totals will be higher south of Atlanta.  Many folks in the south metro area down into central Georgia could see between 2 and 3 inches of rain before it all ends late Sunday.

Rain is Here...Sticking around for a while

The rain moved in today from the SW toward the NE.  There is plenty of light rain around mixing in with some areas of moderate rain.  There will be some pockets of heavy rain at times, too.

The threat for severe weather remains well to the south.  There may be a few rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning here, but any damaging winds or severe storms will be to the south.

The main threat will be some heavy rain.  Check the video to see the graphic for rain potential.  Areas north of I-20 could see around an inch or more of rain.  To the south, there may be some spots that pick up between 2 and 3 inches of rain.

More updates to come this evening.

ATLANTA WEATHER | Rain Moves In

The first part of the day will have some dry hours on Saturday.  The rain will move in after lunch and continue pushing across our area late afternoon into the evening.

We will be in a more stable environment with this system.  This will mainly be a rain event for us.  You may hear a couple of rumbles of thunder later tonight into tomorrow morning, but the threat for severe weather will stay to the south.  The main risk for severe thunderstorms will be roughly south of a line from Columbus to Macon.

We will have to keep an eye on rain totals.  As the rain moves in this afternoon, it will be pretty persistent through late Sunday.  Many areas will pick up between a half inch to an inch and a half of rain before it all ends.  The flooding threat is still small, just watch out for some ponding on roads in some areas.

I will keep an eye on the rain as it moves in.  More updates later.

Atlanta Severe Weather Chances **Update**

Atlanta Severe Weather Chances **Update**

Tomorrow's Chance for Severe Weather

The latest runs for the NAM are in and the system is slowing down as I was expecting from earlier runs, and it brings in a little cold air damming from the response to the surface low deepening. Basically as the low starts to come out of the gulf and head towards georgia, some of the air wil get banked along the Appallacians and come back this direction cooler. This will enhance the rain cooled air we will already have in place. Basicaly this keeps the warm fron to our south and the best threat for severe weather to our south. Things could change in tomorrow morning's runs, but I think this is the way it is going to go down tomorrow night.

Check out the model runs below and you will see the difference between runs. This is the NAM model.

I am giving it a 2 on a scale of 1-10.
