Atlanta Weather | 3PM Update

Atlanta Weather | 3PM Update

The situation

As of 3pm there are a few t-storms in far N Georgia, none are severe at this point in time. We have tornado watches just to our north and west basically covering a large chunk of the US. There have already be a lot of tornado reports across the Midwest and the SE today. Here is the good news for us, nothing is happening now and when it does start getting closer to N Georgia the instability will have gone down a bit. Look below and chack out the STP (significant tornado parameter) for N Georgia at midnight tonight. It is down a bit from what it is right now across the midwest. This does not mean that we will not see a tornado or that the chance is less. All it means is that if a tornado forms it is less likely to be a massive one like they are seeing in the midwest as we speak.

Timing and Strength of Storms

Atlanta Severe Weather | Severe Weather Likely Tonight

Atlanta Severe Weather | Severe Weather Likely Tonight

The Situation

It has been a rough morning for parts of Alabama with reports of a long tracked tornado hitting parts of Huntsville hard.... This was all along a retreating warm front that we talked about yesterday. This afternoon that warm front will have moved through all of N GA and will set the stage for later tonight. Storms are currently forming along a cold front in IL, KY, TN, and MO... This is the front that is heading towards our state. All of N GA is under a moderate risk as you can see below. All of the metro area is under a 10% chance of a tornado happening within a 25 mile point, with most of it under a 15% chance. Those are high probabilities folks..... The atmosphere will be condusive for tornadoes across parts of N Georgia later tonight into tomorrow morning. Strong Damaging winds are also possible as well as large hail. Again this is a serious situation for N Georgia later tonight.

Timing

The Situation

Atlanta has now been placed under a moderate risk for severe weather later tonight. What this means is that there is an enhanced risk for severe storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and the potential for isolated tornadoes. The main area of concern later tonight for tornadoes is the western and north Western sections of the state, essentially a line from Rome to Blue Ridge. Metro Atlanta does have the risk for tornadoes later tonight, but the risk is not as high as it is to the NW. The metro Atlanta counties of, Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, Gwinett, Rockdale, Cowetta, Fayette, and Douglass all have the risk for severe storms with damaging winds the main threat, but isolated tornadoes are not out of the question. Just North and NE of the metro area the risk is also damaging winds with a slightly lower threat for tornadoes.

Atlanta Weather | T-Storms Tonight

Atlanta Weather | T-Storms Tonight

We will keep the chance for showers in the forecast through the rest of the afternoon. A cold front is forecast to move into the area by the evening, bringing a chance of thunderstorms. Some of the T-Storms could produce damaging winds, hail, and frequent lightning. Isolated tornadoes are also possible. The storm prediction center has placed the NW corner of the state in the moderate risk and has now been expanded south to included the North Metro area.  There will be the potential for hail, strong winds and isolated tornados. The threat will last through Saturday morning.

Long Term:

Skies should clear by Saturday mid-morning, but we will cool down behind the front. Temps on Saturday will  in the low 60s. Remains dry over the weekend and the beginning of next week.

Tomorrow Night Could Be Bad In NW GA

I will know better in the morning with the new model runs, but as of right now we have a good chance of seeing some severe weather capable of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes as far south as just north of the Metro Atlanta area. I have been looking over all the latest data and have come to the conclusion that the only thing preventing us from having a higher chance of severe weather is the fact that once the storms make it to metro Atlanta the will encounter some of that mystery stable air tha tthe last few storms have hit. I think it might be a mini wedge from the Appalachians that affects parts of N Georgai.... like an invisible barrier.\

The Setup

Looking at Some Experimental Data For Tomorrow Night

Looking at Some Experimental Data For Tomorrow Night

From the NWS

The image you see above is a new product the NWS is testing, it is called the thunderstorm percentage map... Pretty simple huh? The darker the orange gets the better of a chance of convective activity there is. Notice tomorrow the N TN and S KY area are pretty much in the 100% category..  We fall in the 70% category, but notice how the further south you go from the metro area the less the chance you have to see t-storms.. Cool huh? This is combining several factors: moisture, instability, lift, and a few other things.
