Protect Your Plants Tonight

Protect Your Plants Tonight

ATLANTA -- Winds will calm down this evening with clear skies and temperatures dropping into the 20s and 30s. Due to the late season low temperatures, the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for metro Atlanta from 9 p.m. Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A Freeze Warning means that nighttime temps could threaten outdoor plants. With temperatures as warm as they have been lately, many of you have already begun to plant for spring. If not protected, your outdoor plants may be destroyed along with other early spring growth.

The plants most vulnerable to frost are soft woods, actively growing bloomers, and potted plants.

There are a few ways your can keep your plants safe:

The best way, if possible, is to bring your plant inside for the night.

Many people mistakenly use plastic to protect plants from frost. While this can be effective, it is a practice that some expert gardeners warn against.

Chilly start to the day with temps in the 40s and winds. A weak cold front will move across the area today. No rain (or snow) associated with the front, but it will increase our winds. A Wind Advisory will remain in effect through 8pm.
Winds will diminish quickly tonight and temperature will fall into the 20s and 30s prompting a freeze warning. The Freeze Warning will last until 9am Tuesday.
Temps will get back to the low 60s by Wednesday.

Long Term:

Temps will hit the 70s by Friday, but the chance for showers and thunderstorms will also return. For now it looks like the rain will be in the forecast through the upcoming weekend.

Sunday Evening Webcast

After a windy day with a mix of sun and clouds, the wind will settle down this evening.  It will pick back up again overnight and tomorrow.

Our high temp today was 52 degrees.  That's 9 degrees below average.  Our peak wind gust was 38mph this afternoon!

Check out the webcast to see what's ahead.

Mid Afternoon Wind Update

Mid Afternoon Wind Update

The wind advisory will remain in effect until 6pm Sunday.  So far, winds have been pretty brisk.  Take a look at the map of the wind contours.  The yellow to orange colors show wind in the 4pm hour between 20-30mph.  We are even getting some gusts that are above 35mph.  Earlier, Gainesville had a 43mph wind gust.

The wind will begin to die down during the evening hours.  Colder temperatures will move in.  It will get down to 37 degrees by Monday morning.  A few clouds will mix in as the cold air settles in.  There is a chance for a few blowing flurries well to the north tonight.  We are not expecting any accumulations with those flurries.

The wind will whip up again Monday.  It looks like winds will be from the NW at 10-20mph.  Right now, we expect them to stay below the wind advisory criteria.

Wind Advisory Sunday-WEATHER BLOG

The windy conditions today could cause some additional problems for folks who are cleaning up the damage from Friday's tornadoes.  The wind will whip up from the NW today at 15-25mph with some gusts between 30-35mph.  This will not only be uncomfortable, but will be dangerous with blowing debris from the storms.

These winds could cause some problems for folks who have tarps on their homes.  It will also dislodge any hanging limbs or unstable trees that were damaged in the storms.  I saw many trees in Paulding County yesterday that had insulation and debris stuck in them.  Some of that debris will get blown around today and could fall out of those trees.  I also saw pieces of metal awning in trees and hanging from buildings.  This could also get dislodged with today's winds.
