A severe weather threat is possible for metro Atlanta residents as a strong storm system moves into Georgia overnight Monday and early Tuesday, according to 11Alive meteorologist Chris Holcomb.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center says the metro Atlanta area is under a "slight" risk of severe weather on Monday and Tuesday, but that could change as forecast models are updated, Holcomb says.

The main threats will be severe thunderstorms, possible tornadoes and heavy rain with potential flooding. There could have 3-5 inches of rain through Wednesday in our area.

The 11Alive Weather Team is continuing to monitor computer models and will keep you up-to-date on the timing and intensity of the storm.

'Perfect' weekend but storms likely headed our way next week

'Perfect' weekend but storms likely headed our way next week

High pressure will continue to dominate our area this weekend, so expect plenty of sunshine both Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the low 80s.

We will start to see the changes on Monday. Clouds will move in, with only a slight chance for rain, mainly Monday evening.

Better chance for showers and thunderstorms ahead of a slow moving cold front on Tuesday.

Right now it appears the front will not move through the area until Wednesday, so much of the week we will have a chance for rain.

Next rain chance Friday

Another sunny day and much warmer for Thursday. Highs will be near 80. The changes will come late on Thursday as a few clouds move into the area ahead of another system that will bring rain early on Friday. Showers will quickly move through in the morning and clear by the afternoon.

The will set us up for a great weekend weather wise. Sunshine both Saturday and Sunday with highs in the 80s. Enjoy

Lyrid meteor shower coming on Earth Day

Lyrid meteor shower coming on Earth Day

This would be an excellent week to watch the Lyrid meteor shower, except for a pesky moon that will wash out much of the show, astronomers say.

The annual Lyrid meteor shower peaks this year on the morning of Earth Day, April 22, but will be visible for much of the week.

However, the presence of a more than half-full moon in the sky — what astronomers term a 'waning gibbous' moon — will make watching for the falling stars less a thrill than in some years.

Still, "the Lyrids are bright, so they can withstand some moonlight, said Deborah Byrd, editor of the astronomy and science website EarthSky.org.
